Helen, thank you for writing this article. When starting a job at a well-respected non-profit I was introduced to an older black employee and she immediately asked “who’s assistant are you?” Needless to say, I was not an assistant. That has stayed with me for years. We should be doing better. The glass ceiling at these organizations are low for women and even lower for women of color. I often lament to anyone who will listen that the sector needs organizational transparency. I would love to see diversity reports become standard, and organizations incentivized through funding to invest in inclusivity and diversity.
